How we grow
Here at Gourmet Leaves we believe in growing fantastic quality lettuce leaves in the most environmentally considerate way we can. Our polytunnel will hold nearly 2000 lettuce at any one time in a hydroponic system designed by Kate and built by husband Jamie.
It really is a labour of love as everything is done by hand- from cutting the growing media and planting the seeds to physically checking the tunnel throughout the day and night. This ensures that the conditions are optimum and combats any proplems that arise such as pump failures and leaking pipes.
Our leaves are completely clean- no soil is used so there are no muddy messes to clean off before eating- although we do recommend washing the leaves before use as we keep a small army of lady birds and wasps in the tunnel to keep the pests under control. The lettuce is never watered from above so the leaves keep their protective coating which prolongs their life after picking and keeps them fresh for much longer than the supermarket version.
